Even though Tiktok was the most downloaded app in 2019, Tiktok is the most toxic app on the app store right now. Racist and colorist themed video’s are very common to see on the for you page. Crazy right? It sucks to say that Tiktok is doing nothing about this.
I first downloaded Tiktok in September of 2019. I was already familiar with Tiktok since it was formerly Musicial.ly. Tiktok bought Musical.ly in 2016, and the app surfaced in America app stores in 2018.
Musical.ly was known as the “lip-syncing app” with cringe worthy content. Baby Ariel, Loren Gray, Danielle Cohn, and Jacob Sartorius launched their career on Musicial.ly by making lip-syncing videos.
When I downloaded Tiktok in 2019, racist videos were not popular on the app. Of course there always going to be a few users on the app that are haters, but the app was not toxic in the summer last year. Surprisingly, positivity was actually existent on the app in 2019.
Around late December 2019, I started to gain a lot of followers rapidly due to my videos going viral every week on Tiktok. My videos on Tiktok consist of reacting, zodiac jokes, and Tiktok tea. While I was gaining followers at a rapid pace, I received a lot of hate on the app. Users on the app would comment about my psychical traits, including my gapped teeth and my “lazy eye”( which I do not even have). People love to talk so much BS about you behind the screen but not to your face.
In early 2020, I started to notice a lot of popular creators on Tiktok getting exposed for saying the N word. A lot of these popular creators were white. The disrespect is CRAZY in this world. Most fans of the popular creators would make excuses for them saying that everyone says the N word. I love when people say “well everyone says the N word in New York.” I also love when people use the excuse “______ was at a young age when they said the N word.” These popular creators only apologize when they are caught saying the N word, but I definitely do not agree with cancel culture.
First of all, if you are saying the N word as a white person at twelve years old, you are not being raised right. Parents should teach their kids that the N word has history attached to it. The N word was used to degrade black people, especially during the Civil Right’s Movement, and to abuse us mentally and psychically.
Another trend on this app is users making fun of traumatizing events. For example, slavery, the Holocaust, 9/11, and more. I have to admit there was a trend about World War 4 on Tiktok that was funny, but it NEVER happened.
It also hurts to see black people giving their non-black friends a “N word pass.” First of all, who the hell created this stupid thing? Our ancestors should be ashamed of us seeing black people giving the authority to non black people to say the N word freely. They fought for us to vote and have an education, and black people are not regarding the sacrifice our ancestors went through.
Another popular trend I see on Tiktok is black guys (not all of course) degrading black girls. There is nothing wrong with you liking outside of your race, but when you have to bring up the fact that black girls are “ugly” and “too dark”, there is a problem. All black girls are beautiful, and we come in all shades. It sucks when people presume that we are only darkskin. I am not saying that just guys do this, but it sucks to see a video everyday on my for you page talking about black girls being “ugly.”
In addition, many people on Tiktok tend to have a fetish for their babies to look a certain way. For example, many white girls on Tiktok do a videos showing mixed babies so they can look a certain way. I also saw a video of a Asian teenager saying he will only date a black girl to have blasian baby..Please do not have children so you can plan for them to look a certain way. This is not a laboratory..have kids with someone you truly love.
We also can’t forget people on Tiktok that love to tell girls that they are dark. This generation is so uneducated that some boys tend to believe that lightskins are their own race..It sucks to see that colorism is a global problem. In Asia, lighter skin is praised. In the black community, girls of lighter melanin get more praise than girls of darker melanin. There was a trend on Tiktok where Indians were saying that being darkskin is bad. Things need to change in this world.
Even though I can write a whole book about the racism and colorism on Tiktok, it is up to Tiktok to change its algorithm and not promote these videos on the for you page.
Things need to seriously to change.
