In today’s beauty industry, Rihanna and Selena Gomez are reigning with their cosmetic empires. With celebrities making their mark in the beauty industry, what happened to Kylie Cosmetics?
Kylie Jenner had the beauty industry in her palm with the release of Kylie Cosmetics. In 2015, Kylie Jenner used her platform to market herself as a successful entrepreneur. While being the youngest Kardashian-Jenner sister, all eyes were on Kylie growing up. Once she hit her late teens, people were wondering if she was going to become a model, actress, fashion designer, or a socialite. Personally, Kylie Jenner really shocked everyone with Kylie Cosmetics. She used her popular friend group, family, and her fans to make millions. No one expected Kylie Jenner to make millions from lip kits after graduating high school. With her King Kylie era, she was ruling Snapchat and being the queen of lip kits.
With that being said, it is time to discuss what happened to the former reigning beauty queen.
1. Product Complaints
Kylie Jenner started her takeover with lip kits. The glossy and matte choices had teen girls in a chokehold. With parents spending close to $50-60 for one lip kit, teen girls raved about their purchases on social media. While doing a duckface pose, young customers would literally cry if they were reposted on the Kylie Cosmetics Instagram page. With Kylie stating that she received a fuller lip look with her products, it was deemed socially unacceptable if you didn’t own a lip kit. Even though this sound amazing, many customers started complaining about their products being cheap and/or being damaged.
Pictured above, this was one of the many images that will go viral regarding Jenner’s products. Now, no one’s brand will ever be perfect. There will always be malfunctions, but they can be fixed. Allegedly, customers could not received returns and replacements for their products.
2. Beauty Gurus
When Kylie Cosmetics released, beauty gurus were the most popular creators on YouTube. If Jeffree Star, Patrick Star, or James Charles bashed your product, it was most likely going to fail. After a successful first year, it seemed that Kylie Cosmetics was getting dragged through the mud on YouTube. Within expanding into eyeshadows and brushes, Beauty gurus deemed the brand as over hyped, colors not being pigmented, and ultimately not being worth the purchase. When Jeffree Star reviewed Kylie Cosmetics, it was not all sunshine and rainbows. With his thoughts being brutally honest about Kylie’s products, he was allegedly removed over her PR list. Now this definitely was not a good move. Jeffree Star was not the only beauty guru who bashed Kylie Cosmetics, but his videos were the most popular about the brand. Even though Jeffree is not the most liked beauty guru, many of his customers have raved about his cosmetic brand, Jeffree Star Cosmetics.
3. Being Unauthentic
Remember how I mentioned earlier that Kylie Jenner achieved her full lip look with her products? During her reign with Kylie Cosmetics, many people started to wonder why Kylie’s lips became bigger overnight. With Kylie Jenner denying lip filler claims, a lot of her customers were fooled. It wasn’t until 2015 that she admitted to having lip-fillers. Did Kylie Jenner build her brand on lies? There is nothing wrong with overlining your lips, but many of her fans started to call her out on her lies. Kylie Jenner has publicly stated that she was bullied on social media for her appearance. Even though one should never be bullied for having small lips, many of her fans started to giving the youngest Jenner a side eye.
4. Fenty Beauty
In 2017, Rihanna shook up the ENTIRE beauty industry. With having 50 shades that were catered to all skin tones, some cosmetic brands were effected. I like to call this the “Fenty Effect.” Classic brands like Maybelline, Loreal, and Revlon were forced to cater to all of their customers. I am not saying that Kylie cosmetics could not have reigned with Fenty Beauty, but Kylie Cosmetics was becoming “boring.” Customers and beauty gurus complained about eyeshadow palette’s becoming repetitive. Kylie Cosmetics was not the once innovative brand it was, it was becomingly news.. I firmly believe if Kylie Jenner did not become repetitive with her releases, she could still be the King Kylie of the beauty industry.
